From a business standpoint to News corp. its a low overhead media portal which allows them to promote music, movies and any other news corp entity which fits. To the user its a free way of keeping in touch with friends and getting in touch with old friends. For some its a way to feed various social addictions and for others a way to get their name out there whether they are musicians, comedians, or fledgling whatevers.
